Prior to the Liam era, Justin Gaston was a significant love interest for Miley. The two dated at the age of 16, first meeting each other at the time that Gaston starred in the singing competition "Nashville Star" co-hosted by Miley's father. Their relationship lasted for just an entire year, when she met Liam Hemsworth right after, whom she recorded "The Last Song" with. Evidently, it wasn't just filming that caused conflict as much as the fact that Miley was in contact with her ex Nick. Justin stated, "She didn't cheat, however, I think Nick was trying to win her back the whole time."
